Why Do Buildings Use Flat Roofs?
Pitched roofs were historically common because they shed heavy rain and snow quickly. Low-slope roof designs became popular in dry climates, including much of Natomas, CA. They work well with modern building layouts and make better use of the upper floor because the roofline does not create an unused attic triangle. A flat roof can also provide a practical place for rooftop equipment. Many buildings use that space for mechanical units or service access. Framing is often simpler than a steep roof with several gables. Drainage and membrane details still have to be laid out correctly.
